Dendritic Growth Velocity of Ice Crystals
نویسنده
چکیده
The dendritic growth velocity of ice crystals is measured at undercooking levels between 5 -8.5 K using a unique apparatus. The result shows that the measured velocities are smaller than the theoretical prtiiction based on the thermal diffusion theory with the scaling constant, o = 0.025, which has been shown to agree with the experimental results at lower undercooking levels between 0.4 2.5 K. This deviation may be attributed to sluggish interface kinetics which start playing a significant role in dendritic growth at these undercooking levels. PACS: 61 .50.Cj

Time-Lapse, in Situ Imaging of Ice Crystal Growth Using Confocal Microscopy
Ice crystals nucleate and grow when a water solution is cooled below its freezing point. The growth velocities and morphologies of the ice crystals depend on many parameters, such as the temperature of ice growth, the melting temperature, and the interactions of solutes with the growing crystals. Three types of morphologies may appear: dendritic, cellular (or fingerlike), or the faceted equilib...
متن کاملThe physics of snow crystals
We examine the physical mechanisms governing the formation of snow crystals, treating this problem as a case study of the dynamics of crystal growth from the vapour phase. Particular attention is given to the basic theoretical underpinnings of the subject, especially the interplay of particle diffusion, heat diffusion and surface attachment kinetics during crystal growth, as well as growth inst...
متن کاملNumerical Simulation of Three-Dimensional Unsteady Flow past Ice Crystals
The unsteady flow fields around falling columnar ice crystals, hexagonal ice plates, and broad-branch crystals are simulated by numerically solving the time-dependent Navier–Stokes equations appropriate for these geometries in the primitive equation form. A predictor–corrector method and a quadratic interpolation for convective kinematics (QUICK) scheme are applied on nonuniform grids to determ...
متن کاملIdentification of a Novel “Fishbone” Structure in the Dendritic Growth of Columnar Ice Crystals
Ice crystals growing in highly supersaturated air at temperatures near -5 C exhibit a distinctive, nonplanar dendritic morphology that has not been previously documented or explained. We examine this structure and identify its most prominent features in relation to the ice crystal lattice. Developing a full 3D numerical model that reproduces this robust morphology will be an interesting challen...
متن کاملTesting the influence of small crystals on ice size spectra using Doppler lidar observations
[1] Analysis of the vertical velocity of ice crystals observed with a 1.5mm Doppler lidar from a continuous sample of stratiform ice clouds over 17 months show that the distribution of Doppler velocity varies strongly with temperature, with mean velocities of 0.2ms 1 at 40 C, increasing to 0.6ms 1 at 10 C due to particle growth and broadening of the size spectrum. We examine the likely influenc...
